which power supply?

I'm thinking about buying these items:

CPU:

MOBO:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=MB-101-GI

RAM:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...odid=MY-114-CR

How much power would I need for these? (I'm running a fairly old 512MB ATI RADEON graphics card, but will probably upgrade to a new GTS, and have a 250GB SATA MAXTOR drive to boot from, and will probably buy a 500GB Western Digital drive for data storage)

Aith that in mind, how much power would I need, and what would be a good brand of power supply for me?

I'm looking for the cheapest option really, but not something crap, and want to buy from overclockers UK.

Thanks alot.

I would go with this:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...X2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-620HXUK)

or

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...Cooling Silencer 610 EPS12V 610W Power Supply

You probably could get away with the 500W range version of the these power supplies. But these two would give you some room to upgrade. The Corsair is a modular PSU while the PC Power and Cooling is not.

Oh and to let you know, your links aren't working. I picked the PSU by looking at what you said below.

Hi thanks for the reply. My links aren't working? They work ok for me. Anyway, what do you mean by modular? Is that only for doing SLI?..I'm probably not going to, but have just one 8800GTS in there.

Modular just means that you only have to plug in the cables you need into the power supply. Makes it easier for cable management for good air flow. The PC Power and Cooling PSU is not modular. So you will have left over cables that you will have to put somewhere making it harder to have good air flow. Both are great PSU's though.

I agree with Stevenson's choices, but since you said you wanted the cheapest option that was good. I will have to suggest the cheapest that is great :D

Its actually wha Stevenson said, the Corsair 520HX, the little brother of the 620HX, at 59.99, its a good deal.

Sure enough you could go for the Corsair TX650 which is 49.99 this week, its another great product, but its not modular... then again that leaves it up to u to figure.

Otherwise, for a slightly cheaper modular PSU, the Antec NeoHe 500 at 54.99, it isn't as well regarded as the 520HX, but then again we are talking about great versus amazing.

Dont skimp out on a psu! Get a good one as the cheap ones tend to be over-rated and dont put out as much as they say the do. Just about any psu that is under $60 is prob crap. Buy a good one and it will be the last one you will have to buy. I would say a 600-700watt should do just fine.

The ones suggested are all good PSUs, keep in mind he is talking in pounds or something, so the 60 mark doesn't hold true there.

600-700 watt is a HUGE overkill for his system. A quality 500 watt unit will more than suffice. A computer like mine uses maybe 400 watts at max load.

I was thinking about upgrades down the line! Plus big power supplies are not even that much more than a little one now days. You might as well go big and spend the little extra cash. Look at my Signature. I got a 600watt for those specs. Buying a big psu isnt going to use more electricity either b/c your pc only uses what it needs.

Yeah I guess you could put it that way, but personally I think a nice 500 watt PSU will do. If he wants to go SLI later, he can always pick up a drive bay PSU. Your computer uses up a lot less power than you'd think ;).

Thanks for all the replies. They've all been really helpful. I'm probably going to go for the corsair 520HX, as I like the idea of modular PSU's (Never had one before...my cables have always been a mess), and based on what you guys said, I think 520W will be enough for the particular system that I'm looking at.

P.S. The exchange rate from GBP to U.S. dollars is approximately a factor of two...so a $60 PSU is equivalent to a £30 PSU in UK. But, also everthing is much cheaper in the states anyway, even after converting the currencies. :(

Modular isn't necessarily needed unless you have the Antec 900 or so. Look into the OCZ StealthXStream and GameXStream also.

Go for modular! I am regretting that I didnt as I have a huge mass of extra wires inside my case. Not to mention im using a stock HP case so room is tight.

HP case? I wonder why

The most important thing is, there are many ways to hide the wires. Drive bays, zip ties, hiding them behind the motherboard, ect.
