Which processor for DFI LanParty Mobo?

I just purchased the DFI LanParty nF4 SLI-DR mobo along with the OCZ Platinum DDR400 2 gig. memory.
I was planning on the AMD Athlon processor but a friend of mine told me that the AMD Opteron series is much better. I am not using the computer for business, just for home use to use photoshop, audio and video. Not too much gaming.
Which processor would be better for me?
Thanks in advance.

Well the opterons are very good overclockers. Since your not doing gaming and ur doin work with photoshop, audio, and video apps then i would get an X2 processor.

What is your budget?

My budget has gone out of control on this, quite frankly. So spending a few dollars for a good processor will just add to the pain but I'll live.
Just to give you an idea-

Aerocool Spiral Galaxies case
CP power and Cooling 510W. power supply
1 WDRaptor drive(for apps)
2 WD 320 drives-one for audio, another one for video/photos
OCZ Platinum memory-2 gigs.
And the DFI mobo.
I'm too lazy to post the rest, but from this you can get the picture that I began with a certain budget and blew it just on the first order. But I want something nice, so you have to spend a few bucks. I'm just concerned about the differences between the Opteron and the Athlon processors. I know they are both good, but which one will be right for me is the question.

man, that's alot of audio if you plan on filling a 320Gb HD with it

i did alot of research before deciding on an opteron chip. I do alot of photoshop and some video editing and 3d stuff, and the x2's seemed to be the best for that. when I found out that the opterons had more flexibility and were built slightly better I decided to go with them. if you dont mind overclocking, you could easily push an opteron 165 or 170 to 2.5 Ghz (I've seen a 170 pushed to 3 something actually) and get extremely good performance out of them.
