which processor is faster?

i have a sony vaio laptop, but it is slow for video editing. it has a celeron 2.40 GHz processor and 512mb of SDRAM. which processor is more powerful and faster my current celeron 2.4 GHz or a newer Pentium Core Duo 1.86 GHz? by how much?

i figured it was. i was confused because 2.40 GHz is bigger than 1.86 GHz

the core duo has a much larger L2 cache and it's dual core processor actually acts like 2 - 1.86 GHz processors... 2 X 1.86 = 3.72 > 2.4

Not exactly.

Everyone is right in saying that the Core Duo is much better. The Core Duo is also a different architecture, so thats why the clock speed is slower.

That's not good logic.

As I've stated in various other posts, the Core Duo has a different architecture than what the Pentium 4's have, which focuses on effeciency at lower clock speeds.

Pentium Core Duo 1.86 GHz?
btw they replace "pentium" with "core" therefore its simply "core duo" not Pentium anymore.
also, thats like saying a pentium d is better at 3ghz because it makes 6ghz and an X2 4600+ only make 4.8ghz. it just doesnt make sense. the 4600+ would win in any benchmark btw.
so, in conclusion, just as always, you can't compare the clockspeed of two different cores. not to mention a core duo has two cores and the celeron has one.. dual core is VERY nice for things like video editing.
the same goes for single cores. its like saying that a pentium 4 is better at 2.53ghz than any single core athlon 64 (not including the FX)
when in fact, the 3000+ at 1.8ghz would most likely beat it at any benchmark.
also, technically it is 1.86ghz*2 but thats speaking in core duo frequency, not celeron frequency... and its never really as good as 3.72ghz because ghz is a speed... just like miles per hour. dual core is simply a technology that lets the processor do twice the amount of work...

i always liked this analogy... its like two trains carrying 20 people a piece. their max speed is 120miles per hour, but together they can carry 40 people. so if they have 80people to transfer, it takes them half the time... but if they only have 20 people to transfer, then you only need to use one train.
