im upgrading my mother board and cpu but i dont know what to get. im stuck on either a intel pentium d 820 or an amd athlon 64 3400 or 3700. i recode alot of movies burn and download music and surf the web. which one should i get i want to be as fast as possible yet still not get scammed on the pentium d is it a true duel core?...how do i know?

Yes, it is a true dual core. For your tasks it will perform much better than the athon 64, but not as well as the X2 3800 (which is a little more expensive)

There is a pretty big price difference between the Athlon 64 3700 and the Pentium D 820. What is your budget on a processor? Because if you want it to be "as fast as possible" then you could spend $1000+....

The Pentium D is a dual core, but the 800 series gets its butt kicked by even some Athlon single cores in certain tasks. For multitasking, however, the Pentium D would be the best choice.

alright well let me clarify myself for the mother board and cpu my budget is around 350 as long as i buy them in a bundle off line...i dont really do a lot of multi tasking..i think the most would be running internet, while burning a cd or recoding a dvd while listening to music....do you thinkn a p4, pd, or amd athlon 64...thhanks

Why the 940? For ~$60 less you can get a 930. I have the 930 and i think its an excellent CPU.

THe 940 that I posted is $260, and the 930 that he posted is $256. I figured that for $4, it would be better to go with the 940.

i prefer athlon 64 or core duo myself, but im a gamer.
pentium D 8xx i hear has major heat issues and overclocking problems, thats why i dont like them. pentium D 9xx would be good though, for the money they cost.

any dual core cpu is good,
yea but were talking price/performance... pentium D's and X2's perform different in different apps.
