Which processor to choose i5 v. i7

Hello everyone, I am new to this forum.

To start off, I usually keep up with new technology/ computers but have only done some research on the second generation intel cores.

I am looking to order/customize a new laptop very soon (probably Toshiba or HP).

I definitely want a core i5 or better.

One laptop I might customize gives the option of a i7-2630QM 2.0 upgraded from the i5-2410M for only $65.00. Seems like it may be worth it. How much do these differ? Ive looked at benchmark testing but not sure how valid those test are.

Would single core speeds (w/ turbo boost on both are both clocked at 2.9) be the same for both?

If this helps any: I am looking to use the laptop for day-to-day general computing, and also engineering applications, and things such as advanced calculations in Excel. I know clock speed doesn't mean much.

Any information, opinions, or insight is appreciated.

i5 has 4 cores 4 threads, i7 has four cores and eight threads, so you can possibly get a kick in the pants if it takes advantage of the extra threads

Honestly I would say if you were just gaming an i5 would easily be best bang for the book. But the fact that you make mention in of engineering apps. I would be on the safe side depending on how in depth you get with them and just run the I7. just my 0.2 though.
