Which ram?

I have a Dimension 4550 series thats has a 2.66GHz processor and I don't know what ram to use. Somebody else told me that I need a very special version of ram but I don't know. So could someone help me out? I want a total of 1GB and right now it has 256MB and there are two slots with one filled right now.
 
Go to www.cpuid.com and download CPU-Z, then go to the Memory tab and either tell us what it says, or post a screen shot.

I'm going to take a guess and say DDR, but it could be SDRAM or DDR2.

He can't b/c his desktop won't boot Windows, so he is upgrading before he fixes Windows.
 
Go to tigerdirect.com, the last time i went there they had a memory selector option where you just type in the model and or serial number of your system and they will let you know what type. They also have great prices on memory.
 
Well if it takes any DDR 2700 I can just get a stick of 1GB and put in there besides spending over $100 for 512MBx2.
 
They special make this for Dell, I would assume that this is the only thing that would work. Other than the 256Mb modules that are the same thing.

If it takes PC2700 then you can use any brand, it doesnt have to be a Dell brand to work. But if you are using your existing RAM you may run into problems. I would replace the current RAM with a 1GB set of PC3200, even if your motherboard cant support those high speeds, it's the most common type of DDR and is actually cheaper.

That's if you are using your own RAM? I thought it was solely for Dell's idiotic motherboards?
 
Well I planned on taking out the current ram and just adding 1 stick of 1GB. I just hate to spend $100 on ram alone because I wanted a graphics card.

Their motherboards may not work with 100% of the RAM out their, but for the most part it should work. I know i've used RAM from Newegg before in my Dell laptops and desktops.
 
Alright I got the desktop working. What can I do to find out the exact type of ram I need? Also is it possible to just get 1 stick of 512MB and add that to my 256MB?
