Which should my friend buy?

Agreed. SSD doesn't boost actual game performance really. Just load times. There might be a few rare exceptions, but in most cases you won't see a FPS difference. CPU will definitely help more.

He'll notice a big difference between the E5300 and the 3570K - especially if he goes and overclocks the 3570K!

I'd get the board and CPU. :) The SSD can come later.

Like everybody else has said, the SSD really is not going to be as beneficial when it comes to gaming. It would be nice to have to increase loading times for different maps and whatnot, but overall, he will be much happier getting the 3570k and overclocking that baby if he wants to! Best of luck!

Yeah, he would notice it for sure with windows boot times and loading game maps. But for games FPS a ssd won't make a difference.

Exactly. Hence why for better performance in games I'd recommend getting a better CPU and board over an SSD.

His 460 should still be fine though. :)
