Which technology will be the next to go?

A few years ago I was at one of these outdoor sales. I saw by the curb a tv with the old vacuum tubes for sale (that must have had a lot of endurance).

So what's next on the chopping block? Desktop computers? Clothing irons? Watches? What's your opinion/

The desktop should've died years ago when they came out with the laptop. I don't see it dying anytime. Watches are more of a style statement than used to actually tell time.

I would say CDs, sadly. I don't like buying music online. Doesn't feel like I own it.

Hell, I don't even buy the CDs if I can find the vinyl for it.

CD's are nice, but

I prefer DVD's myself.

As soon as you buy something, then you may hear the following month that it won't be sold in a few years due to some better technology (sometimes I wish that the ultimate technology would come about soon).

I also prefer vinyl's. CD's replaced them but they are now more of a collector's item. Vinyl's sound better imo.

Sadly, I don't buy dvd's. I'll watch the movie once and then what? That's $10-$20 in the garbage. :(

Hard drives will be gone within the next year or two I say. SSDs are getting bigger, faster, and cheaper. Within 5 years most of us will be on an SSD.

cd's and dvd's are obsolete and soon will be a minor. Cars as example.
Vacuum tubes can and some are worth gold. Ive talked to a few ham operators and pay big bucks to get there equipment working.
my thought. Good candidate for Ebay.

Mostly agree with what you say

Just talked with a Best Buy rep this past friday. He indicates that HDD will be replaced by SSDs AND sata drives.

Dunno if ALL HDDs are going, just IDE's. Or are they already obsolete? Ehh, I have a 500GB IDE drive and it's just fine for me.

i think ide's are out, not sure what the exact speeds of it are, but i'm pretty sure it's slower than sata 2, also in one of the aboves it said replacing hdd's with ssd's and sata drives? hdd's and ssd's are sata drives.

Within the next 5-10 years, computers as we know them, we will have dumb terminals with everything stored on the cloud and only systems that perform specialist tasks and servers will have any sort of processing power

^ This.

Look how much is already cloud based.

i think i'll be hanging onto desktops for as long as i can. There's nothing like the peace of mind that comes with having a HDD that noone else can access.
Thats my beef with the cloud, is that whoever runs it can see what you put onto it.

^^^^ Agree with this

Will be keeping my HDD and SSD for as long as i can. Will try everything in my power to avoid this "cloud" age. I don't trust my documents and what not in someone else's hands. I even have a hard time trusting my money in someone elses hands (Banks).

This so much.

And I think before we have complete takeover of computing by the cloud, there will have to be a widespread, affordable, fast adaptation of WWAN to keep up. I don't think people are going to give up the speed and stability of SSD/HDD based storage without complete coverage around the globe. Heck, here at my house I barely get cell service, let alone WWAN to cover large amounts of DATA.

Plus, with wider spread of cloud storage, the more chances that the government will be looking in on your files and charging even innocents with crimes of infringement. Big Brother is Watching!

I personally think the next technology to go will be chalk boards. They are on the way out anyway. Either that, or OHV engines (I'm keeping mine as long as there are peanuts to power it).

Not a chance. In St Helens you have probably got broadband to match what is known as slow broadband in the States. i.e. about 10mbps.

Here in deepest Norfolk I currently get 1.1mbps, that is fast compared to some. I can stream video but only to one computer at a time. If I'm downloading a large file (lets say Windows updates after a clean install), the kids are kicked off the net while I download it.

Having said all that, I feel quite good about the speed I get knowing that some users are still not on broadband.

Sticking stuff in a "cloud"? For most, its a long way off

you contridict yourself. Your downloading updates from the cloud, yet say cloud access is not available to those with slow internet. You can get the cloud with 56k RJ11.

Its like this. You can ride a horse from Cantley to London, yes? People have done it in the past. You can also drive there in a Bentley. Will you have fun on the horse, probably not. But does that mean you don't get there? no.
Moral: Fast internet isn't needed to get to the cloud, but it does make it easier.

I say pay phones are all going to disappear for good by the end of this decade.

Land line phones, I think, will remain in businesses for the time being, but not so much for residential customers.

This is probably still a long ways off, but I think digital broadcasting will eventually replace the FM radio.
