Which to choose? GeForce 8800 GS 384MB or GeForce 8600 GTS XXX (256MB)?

Hi, I am interested in upgrading my video card to run the game Black & White. At the moment I have a GeForce 6100 PCI-express and the game runs sluggish even with graphics/details reduced.

I'm not looking for the ultimate video card, but a substantial upgrade is what I am after. I'm looking for opinions on whether or not these cards can provide a significant upgrade, and whether or not the 8800 is worth the extra $30.

FYI, I can get the 8600 for $70 and the 8800 for $100.

Thanks!

the 8800gs is a pretty decent card,
considerably better then the 8600gts.

althought that game you mentioned will run at full on either card.. but if your wanting to play any newer games... then the 8800gs will be better...

it really depends on how much you want to spend.
if you only want to play that game and never any others then just get the 8600gts
but in my opinion the 8800gs is much more worth it

No matter what game your playing if theres only 30 bucks difference you will be alot better off in the long run with the 8800GS. You'll end up playing other games.

The 8800GS is clearly the better of the two, hands down. IMO the Geforce 8600GTS is usually overpriced, I would either get the 8800GS or skip down to the 8600GT if you don't need much.

Isn't the 8600 GTS the XXX edition though? If it is I'd probably save my 30 bucks... but if not just get the 8800 GS.

XXX just means it is overclocked, and you can easily do that yourself. Definitely get the 8800GS or maybe the 8800GT 256. The 8600 series will not be good for much longer.

yeah when i had a 6500 i always had to check the system requirements of every game and hope it would run. "usually didnt"
but with my 8800gt i dont have to worry about that at all. apart from crysis on max it will run pretty much any current game.
