Which type of server?

Krysis

Hello, my name is Krysis I am new to the forums so I just want to say hello. Anyway I go to a boarding school and am looking for a good way to share files between my dorm. We have been using shared docs but want to switch to a better system. I was thinking of making a ftp server but I was wondering what distro(if I should use linux) I should use. Also is there a better way to do this? Thanks!

I was trying to figure out which Server software to use for a similar purchase. It was recommended to start with Ubuntu. I downloaded it earlier today and burnt it to a CD for install.

Will probably work with it tomorrow sometime - and see how it goes.

Could you tell me how it is?

I'm not sure if the following violates any rules or not.. Assuming the OP is trying to use this only for legal purposes..

You could set up a LAN bittorrent tracker on said server and swap your data that way, that way there's less stress on the server and it's less centralized, if you have a bit of down time server side any active transfers should still be running

I'm toying around with my Ubuntu right now - more or less winging it - with a reference book ( my book doesn't have much in the ways of setting up a network from scratch ).

I've got Ubuntu installed in my PC successfully as a Samba server setup - and can log in as an account user. But I've not gotten my PC to recognize the server as a client.

I currently have my Server plugged into a wireless internet router - that was currently set up under Windows 7. When I ran the install - I just plugged it into the router before installing Ubuntu.

I was hoping to log into my Client PC - and see a Network. But it looks like I missed something in my setup. Does anybody have a suggestion as to what step I missed?

Thanks
