Which video card shall i get??

my current pc configuration is as follows:
256mb ram
2.0ghz celeron ( owned :P )
80gb 7200rpm
64mb intel 82845g

dont worry , i've finally decided to update it .. but i wanted few suggestions

Ok Mainly iam updating my PC for gaming purposes .. i wanna play those high standard pc games like MEDAL OF HONOR:PACIFIC ASSAULT , DOOM 3 , TOMB RAIDER:ANGLE OF DARKNESS ( and offcourse upcomming halo 2 on windows vista ) with real decent performance ( 30-40+ FPS )

so i decided to upgrade my video card and my ram .. so i'll just add one more stick of 512mb for the ram thing & wanna add a 256mb video card ... which one shall it be ?? ( try within 78$ ) so i get the above mentioned performance

786mb DDR ram ( kingston )
2.0ghz celeron ( no budget to upgrade atleast for a year )
80gb disc 7200rpm ( ultra enuf )
256mb geforce 6600 ( or one u mention )

will that be enough for some decent performance!?
cut games like call of duty 2 , brother in arms .. wont harm much i guess!!

I think that celeron is REALLY going to cripple anything you add... Plus, you didn't tell us what your graphics connection is.

However, whatever you have, it's going to hard to get decent performace with only $78 to spend...

"REALLY CRIPPLE" .. thats the prob. me having ... i cant upgrade a processor now .. its not even out of warranty... BTW if i had a 1.6 ghz pentium would that be better?? ... and will a 128 card and a 256 card .. then a 768mb ram .. wont all of these help ?? .. make me run all those high standard games i told u about?? .. with a decent performance? ( i.e. 45 fps for games like doom 3 at 800x600 and atleast 30fps for games like MOH:pacific assault at the same res. )

and i was going after a geforce 6600 256mb

I think you should definitely go for the 512MB of ram and the geforce 6600 video card. It will actually help you out a ton. I see no reason why your upgraded setup wouldn't be able to play most games at 800x600 res on at least medium settings. For several games, like Doom 3 or Fear, I'm pretty sure you could achieve your desired fps on low settings.

While its true that your celeron cpu will be bottlenecking the rest of your system gaming-wise, it won't be nearly as bad as some ppl on this forum will make it out to be. Even though it is a celeron, it is still a celeron at 2.0Ghz, that would completely and utterly smoke the daylights out of my Pentium 3 733mhz cpu. Good luck on whatever you choose to buy, you will for sure see great performance increases in gaming. :)

Edit - Btw, make sure you get the right video card, either AGP or PCI-Express. My guess is your motherboard only supports AGP, but I don't know the exact specs on it, just judging on when you got your computer.

As The_Other_One said, that Celeron processor is really going to be a problem. A 6600 wouldn't be bad, but there's really no performance increase in the 256MB version over the 128MB version. If you can afford it, a 6600GT would, of course, be better, but your CPU is going to be a bottleneck.

What video card are you upgrading from?

if u guyz didnt notice then games like doom 3 has a minium processor requirement of 1.5ghz pentium IV and recommended 2.0ghz pentium IV .. and my celeron 2.0ghz makes a 1.6 ghz pentium ... But unfortunately i dont see any chance for upgrading my celeron for atleast a year!

And why there wont be any difference in 128mb & a 256mb card ... I cant just buy a 128mb card and leave ... There must be a huge difference between the two!! ... Specially when i upgrade my processor

And one more thing i wanted to ask is that , what kind of lags or slow downs , can a processor bring in games?? .. i mean those low frame rates , that choppy laggy performance or what? ... Will i go from any of those ?

I HATE PC UPGRADES :(

I thought that was what we've been saying - that the Celeron is going to cripple your gaming ability. That's the reason I asked what card you're upgrading from - if it's something reasonable already, you won't notice any significant difference, as the CPU will be the bottleck. If not, you may notice a significant improvement, although high-end games like Doom 3 are going to be a real stretch with that CPU anyway.

Because the 6600 vanilla can't really take advantage of that much video memory (and it has only a 128bit memory interface).

yes celery = garbage, hence the name celery :)
also, 768 = 512+256 = not dual channel = slower. for the ram, just buy two sticks of 512mb and let it run in dual channel :)
also, plan on spending more like $150 for a decent card that'll run doom 3... that game has good graphics (haha crappy graphics according to my graphics card... got HL2 and COD2 running on highest settings and no lag, not quake 4 though, only 1gb of ram :( )

i dont think u will reach 30fps on a 6600 normal, i have a 2.8athlon and on my 6600gt i only jus reached over 30fps and thats with 1gb of memory, try to balance it out more so you can only have 512 ram and use money spare put towards a chip

Ok the Card is 6800 ( 256mb offcourse ) .. And finally i'am ready to spend More money on a 2.8ghz Pentium IV...

so this will make:
768mb ram ( Kingston ) .. or 1gb ( 512 + 512 ) of a cheaper ram
2.8ghz 512CACHE pentium IV
80gb 7200rpm seagate
256mb geforce 6680

how many FPS will i get in DOOM 3 .. with resolution of 640X480 and high settings?

and also if i have a choice between:
1)a higher processor with a lower cache
2)a lower processor with a high cache
then what should be my choice , if iam selecting it considering pc games

if you are going to get 6800 then u will able to play doom 3 at 1280x1024 with high setting with 4x AA with good FPS.

Well, depends on how much cache, you don't need more than 512kb of cache, 256kb is sufficiant. Processor speed is also very important, so aim more for that.
