Which Video Card??

Hi Guys,

New member so "Hello All" :)

I'm currently looking to move up from the standard built in graphics on my PC (Dell P4 3GHz, 1Gb DDR2 RAM, 200Gb SATA HD, standard Intel chipset graphics, running XP SP2)

My motherboard will only accept PCI or a PCIe x1 video cards and I was wondering what you thought my best option would be for an all-round use mid-range video card. I was looking at the PNY NVIDIA Quadro NVS 285 128Mb card. Anybody know anything about this card and wether it would be suitable? I tried Googling it but I don't get any user opinions.

The quadro's are profession CAD cards iirc (well,.. also used for other graphical tasks, but still professional.)
but, what are you planning on doing with the new grafic's card?
if you want to game,.. i think you would be better off getting a PCI x1300.

But then... im not sure about it, since my knowledge of the quadro's is very limited :(

I'm looking for something that will be able to handle a bit of everything really. I'm not a hardcore gamer or anything but I would like it to be able to handle most games without dying. My girlfriend uses Photoshop alot, but no CAD use. Other than that, just the usual programs, videos, etc.
 
How much would the Quadro cost?

is an example of the card i mean.. however, i dont know the brand, so i have no idea if its any good (the brand that is),.. but ill have a look if i can find a other one :o

Edit: here is one on the pci-express 1x bus, wich would be faster than the one on PCI i think

buuut... that one takes system memory for the grafic's.. so if you dont have a lot of memory, i think its not so good.
(looks like it has 128Mb onboard tough.. so im not sure when it would be using system memory)
 
I'm in the UK and the Quadro is £115 which is about $215.

I have 1Gb memory on my system. Do you think the second one you listed would run ok? I'm going to be upgrading to 2Gb at some point but not for a while.
 
"PNY found doa! read all about it at... low quality news" Garbage! Now the leading brands like ATI, Asus, MSI, Sapphire, etc. for the ATI team rival the EVGA, NVidia, MSI, Asus, etc. NVidia team. Between ATI and NVidia alike you can find several great cards for a lower then mid range price for a Dell.

but those are pci-express 16x cards.. ;) besides... my MX440 was a PNY, and i never had any trouble with it.

i think for what you want to do, i'd look for a x1300 PCI card ( its the fastest PCI card as far as i know). where did you want to buy the card from?
 
Yeah, I'm thinking I'll probably go for the x1300 PCI from what you've said. Not sure where I'll get it from yet. I'm in the UK so I'll have to have a search around. Do you know any companies that are based in or deliver to the UK?

If anyone does have any experience with the NVidia Quadra though, I'd still be interested in hearing your opinions on it.
 
Yeah. Unfortunately NewEgg don't ship to the UK :( I haven't been able to find a UK suppier with this card either so if you know of any companies that ship internationally, please let me know.
 
you might want to check a local shop perhaps? or Ebay, usually you can get a nice deal for those cards on there too :)
 
Tried eBay already and they don't have any at the moment on either the UK or the US sites.

Looks like I'll have to try a shop, but I'm sure it would have come up on a search if any local stores stocked them. Otherwise I'm back to the drawing board...
 
the closest thing to the x1300 would be a fx5500/fx5200. both also fine cars (nothing powerfull, but for normal home, garden and kitchen applications.. just fine :) they are also enough for photoshop etc.)
 
Funny you say that. I was actually just looking at the XFX Geforce 5200 PCI card. Would you say that was my second best bet then failing the Radeon x1300 PCIe card? What kind of difference would I notice between a PCI and PCIe x1 card?
 
not much of a difference between the PCI and PCIe x1 card.. the on screen performance would be about the same.
and yea, the fx5200 would be the best bet after the x1300 :) ( the fx5500 is basicly an overclocked fx5200 anyway )

Looks like TigerDirect.com might do international shipping on the x1300 but I need to call them to find out costs (what happened to email??)

It's $110 + shipping and the fx5200 from a UK company works out to $125 inc shipping, so I'll have to weigh up if the shipping costs are going to make it worth while.

If I go for the fx5200 I have a choice of an XFX or an Inno 3D. Any preference/difference?
 
Decided to go for the XFX NVidia GeForce FX5200.

Thanks for your help guys. If it's rubbish I'll be knocking... just kidding :D
