im looking at getting a videocard to hold me over for about a year or less (6-12 months)

i prefer nVidia because i like the drivers far better then ATi and i have an nVidia chipset for SLI (pretty sure you cant crossfire on an nForce 4 board), but i guess im open to ATi...

right now im leaning twards the 7950GT
 
Well if you're only debating between the 256MB x1900XT and the 7950GT, then go with the 7950GT. But if you're also considering the 512MB version of the x1900XT, I would go with that.

It's pretty funny, your poll is even at 1-1-1.
 
I've become a fan of the upper end ATI's, personally. X1900's can do HDR and AA at the same time, right? And they have the horsepower to do it (unlike X1600). That makes me want to give them a try too. But, if the 7950 looks good and has 512 for under 300 like you want, then that ought to do well for you. Is 512MB of Vram really necessary yet?

Also, can your power supply push these cards safely under load?
 
that may be, but why wouldent i want to get a 7950GT which kills the 7600GT SLI? WITH a dedicated 512MB of GDDR3 insted of SLI 256? and what if i want to SLI the card later with another 7950GT?

when running my PSU to the max, im only using 200W...
 
he was talking about two 7600GT's in SLI, which is roughly 8-15% better then a single 7900GT.... and i think you ment the 6600GT, because the 7 series hasnt been out for a year i think?

Here is where the confusion is. Its the B.F.G. 7600 GT OC 256GB BFG. AGP. that I've had for at least a year. They came out with the PCI express version as an afterthought. So to me the 7600 GT PCI is old technology.

Yes, Its possible I may be a little confused. I have to go back and look at my old system and see what's actually in there. I thought for sure it was a 7600 GT AGP

In a few months, your not going to want to buy another DX9 card, your going to want to buy a G80 DX10 card, which would own two 7950GT's in SLI.

Man, did I screw that all up... Yes I got that backwards. It was the AGP they came out with after so people who didn't have the PCI Ex MB's would not have to upgrade to PCI ex MB's I haven't been able to go take a look yet but now I'm thinking its the B.F.G. 6800 GT OC 256GB AGP thats in that system. Which is actually a pretty good card for what it is. It ran BF2 pretty well. I was quite impressed when I first got it. It was my first 256MB card. I think that's why I thought it was a better card than it actually was. So many different cards. Sorry.
