I'm getting back into a video game I quit awhile back, I have a trial set up to see how it will work on my network here at college and its working fine. My major gripe is the graphics. I played this same game awhile back at a pretty high resolution with the settings turned up pretty high (if not max) and I got an average of 25 or so FPS. Now I use the defaults and I get 60 FPS average. As you can imagine I get better performance out of the lower settings but its not as visually pleasing, so I'm asking your opinion, should I keep the settings at the defaults, or play with them maxed out? I can give you a list of my specs if need be.

it really depends on what type of game you are playing. 25 FPS works for me on an RTS game, but for a shooter, i like to keep it around 40 or higher, especially for multiplayer.

Especially with games like CS, I like to keep my games at the refresh rate. Any less than 50 or 40 and it gets sluggish which affects my game play.....

Typically, what I found is that MMO's can run 'smoothly' on low fps with the exceptions of sharp turns and populated cities. You really will only tell the difference when you compare low and high fps (such as changing settings to) or when you have the fps displayed. If anything, it's a matter of personal preference.

Edit: Most of the time, if I find I am in need of performance, I just turn off AA........ I don't necessarily think of AA as a high setting but more of icing on a cake..........

Depends on what you mean by low FPS. There are so many people out there that think that something around 20-25 is low, and that need 70-100+ plus to play best. So sure, If I can pump out the highest setting and not dip below 15 FPS (which in bioshock is smoother than in oblivion for some reason, just alittle choppy) then I'll do it. But if it's a constant "teen" FPS it's too annoying. Luckly Bioshock stays around 20-30 fps.. whew

But what I've found with Bioshock (and any other first-person for that matter) is that with low fps, you'll have problems keeping up with active, mobile enemies. Ex. I had some problems defeating the first couple of 'Choppers' in Bioshock due to the low fps........

I did also, when I first played the demo and didn't have the Nvidia Bioshock drivers installed. When I bought the game I installed them and it went away, I guess because FPS went up alittle bit. I'm halfway through the game, playing with a 7600gt, 2Gb of RAM, and a 2.7ghz X2 3800 and I haven't had a problem since, And this is on max graphic settings.

But in other FPS I don't have that problem, I could play FEAR Combat Maxed with 30 FPS. I don't hope to even try this with Crysis though, I really need to upgrade my graphics card if I want to keep up.

lol look at my machine :D

low FPS and low graphics.

I get the worst of both worlds. But MMOs seem fine with low fps. I get like 20 FPS and decent graphics on wow and its just fine.

i'm one of those pricks that won't play a game unless i can run it at high settings and maintain smooth FPS. so for me, i choose option 3, buy an 8800gtx and a q6600.

Haha I am pushing to build a computer over Christmas break while I'm off of school. I haven't yet discussed it with the parents yet, but I think a solid 1st semester of a 3.5 or better GPA would be a nice bargoning chip. But also, I play on a laptop, and from my knowledge they don't make 8800gtx's or q6600 procs for laptops :)
