Strange, I'm able to download it today. Maybe you just won't be able to play it until the 9th?

Yeah. You can probably pre-load it, but it won't actually launch until the 9th.

Actually, launches fine today. So you can play it before the 9th.

    It's a pre-purchase promotion:

TBH, that doesn't make any sense to me. Doesn't that mean the game is essentially released on April 5th?

Regardless, I'm really interested in this. How are you liking it? I loved AOEII and I have a group of friends who get together and play LAN about once or twice every summer. It'd be awesome to be able to play at a higher resolution and have easier multiplayer options (getting the old games to connect is a nightmare).

It's pretty good. Definitely like the Steam support. The graphics aren't that much better but the water does look a bit better.

I would but 17 euros is way too much for that... Nothing's new with the game, you just get the steam support and "better" graphics...

Agreed. Not interested in Multiplayer and the graphics are not noticeably better anyway.

I like the subtle graphics changes, doesn't ruin the retro feel of it.

I think the HD remake was an awesome move by Hidden Path, bringing a 14-year-old game back to life with better 'graphics' and multiplayer support. I have been an Age of Empires fan since I was a kid in primary school; it is a series that speaks to many people over the last decade and a half.

So as a major fan of the series, of course, I was going to buy it. But I thought I'd wait till after April 5 to see some reviews on the game. Sadly, I was disappointed to learn that most reviews had more negatives than positives. The updated multiplayer feature, while a welcome addition, unfortunately succumbed to much online lag making it "unplayable" (to quote a few reviews.). In addition, many people have complained that it suffers frame-rate lags, even on high-end systems. So these things have held me back from buying it at the moment. Online lag is a deal-breaker for me, AoE is a game that requires real-time response for most effective gameplay.

Hidden Path has acknowledged the problems (on a Reddit discussion with the developers), and will plan on fixing it. I will most definitely buy it when the above problems are resolved or if the price drops from $20, because an updated edition of any Age of Empires game has so much potential to revive an old, (but not forgotten) fan base.

What's the singleplayer like? Any problems?

Frame-rate (lag) issues have been widely reported, even on high-end computers more than capable of handling the game. Other than that, I don't know of any other major issues; it remains the same as the original AoE II.

Some other minor problems include being only able to select 20 units at a time (given that the population cap has increased from 200 to 500, you'd expect to be able to select more). Some people also said that they can't find the option to change the resolution.

Search for reviews on Google and on YouTube. Much more insight.

Having said all this, I know I'll buy it sooner than later, being an AoE fanboy (mostly because multiplayer can now be played through Steam).

It sounds disappointing, similar to Baldurs Gate enhanced edition :/

Yeah, I had a lot of lag playing online, and some strange FPS issues as well. Glad to know it's going to get fixed soon.

You also can't change the resolution of the game like you could with the original. It's just not an option there, I think it automatically detects your current resolution and plays it like that.
