who uses 800x600?

Nice choice, with a 7600GT you can play all the games that are out at the moment, but some newer ones at low settings and probably at 800x600. For example cysis will definitely lag on a 7600GT.

since everyone uses higher than 800x600, i decided to give it a try. im using a regular crt monitor from late 2002. have integrated graphics.

i set my resolution to 1024x768. now im experiencing these problems:
1. everything is too damn small. it hurts my eyes. should i change the dpi from 96 to 120?
2. the start menu has half of it missing. it is not shown in the desktop.
3. when maximized, windows have corners missing and such (not shown)

when i print screen, everything shows up. but it does not on my monitor

is this happening because my monitor is old? because of integrated graphics?

is there an advantage of 1024x768 (or higher) for me?

You just need to adjust the settings of your monitor....go into the monitor menu (look at the buttons on the front of the monitor) and look for something like "auto-adjust". If there isn't an autoadjust option, then adjust the V-size and H-size until everything fits on the screen.

Your monitor must be a CRT then. :P You have to adjust it yourself, I have yet to see a CRT with an auto adjust feature. And regarding the icons being small and hurts your eyes, well firstly how far are you from the screen and secondly (no offence intended) how old are you. My desktop is at 1600x1200 and I can see EVERYTHING as clear as day.

Well the 8600 ultra is a mid range DX10 card, that's why oblivion really lags on it. Why would you go for such a low performing card, even if it is DX10 compliant? I would have used my cash to go for a 7900GT or a GTX. There is no point getting a DX10 card at the moment, the R600 is about to come out and when it does, the price of the 8800 will nose dive. So its a total waste of cash to get an 8800 right now.

OK i couldn't be bothered reading all the post but how do you see the icons and stuff at 1600x1200 well i know you can see them but isn't it annoying cause my monitor and fx card can support it but its just annoying i run at 12 x 10
