Why 64-bit?

Trying to decide if I should upgrade to Ubuntu 64-bit. What are the pros and the cons?

well thats been a problem for 64 bit windows,I dont know if the same stands for Linux becasue its all open source.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you can run 32 bit software, just not as 64 bit software. Isn't 64 bit faster at some stuff?

it is yeah,i noticed a diffrence in how Vista x64 performed when i upgraded from 32 bit.

but again your using linux so....i say go for it mate.

Will do! I hadn't looked until now, but I think I found one... I'll tell you about it in a minute if I can get to work.

It seems to of worked... it's called HardInfo... just sudo apt-get install hardinfo and it should work great. Here's what I got on Ubuntu32 8.10... we'll see how it compares to Ubuntu64 8.10.

Does linux 32 bit have the same thing as windows 32 bit with not recognizing more then 3-3.5 gb ram?

Not much experience with linux but I would assume that 64 bit version would run newer 64 bit applications alot better.

Yeah, if it's truly 32-bit at least. I've never used over 2GB of RAM with Ubuntu so I don't know from personal experience.

I'm running 64-bit Ubuntu now... it seems to run basically the same, but I think some things are faster than they used to be. Here's the benchmarks... not as good as I had hoped... some aren't as good as with 32-bit Ubuntu.
