Why a quad or 64 bit system?

To my knowlege they don't have any programs that will use quad CPU's or 64 bit software. If they do I'm sure they will run just as good on a dual 32 bit system. For 99% of users 3.3 gigs of RAM is enough and I am testing the 64 bit windows 7 which I find a little slower in some of my programs. It sounds to me that the hardware is about 4 years ahead of the software. I'm posting because maybe some of you know something I don't and I'm here to learn.

There are pleanty of programs that run in 64bit. It may not really be mainstream yet, but it's slowly coming around. It's mostly for, as you said, to address more RAM. As you said, most people don't really need much more than 32bit memory limits, which is probably why Netbooks have become so popular :P But some people do need the extra power, and it probably will be a requirement eventually as software and operating systems become more complex.

As for cores... Well, it's really up to the user. As for me, I really need this new quad core. I do a tremendous amount of visualization and I'm beginning to do HD video editing. I know with visualization I can set a core or two to basically be for an OS while my "host" runs on another core or two. Trust me...I tried this on my X2 and it killed it :P And for HD video editing...I just hope an i7 can keep up with it :P
