Why are lcd monitors better than hdtv's?

I just bought a viewsonic monitor like this. It's a 27 inch monitor with hd resolution.

It looks great! But today at best buy I saw a 32 inch 1080p hd tv connected to a pc and it looked great too! Both had the same specs as far as resolution, contrast, etc. but cost roughly the same.
So what is better technically speaking, a pc monitor or hdtv for my pc? I care mostly about having the best picture quality. The man at the store said that monitors had more pixels but both were 1080p so I don't know what the difference is. Thanks!

I've been looking at options too. I'm looking for 32" or larger monitor as a "TV" substitute. I have chosen internet in lieu of cable tv. All I watch is dvd or internet (hulu).Thinking about getting a BluRay and running my computer to the "TV" so I can multitask from recliner with a wireless keyboard/mouse. BTW, does ANYBODY make a wireless keyboard with integrated trackpad? Seems like a no-brainer that mobile keyboard use is unnecessarily hindered by a separate mouse...
Thanks in advance

If they're the same res then they have the same pixels. The difference is the tv has a tv tuner (duh) and of course all the inputs and outputs. Usually the monitors run cheaper do to less internal components and options. PC monitors can have much higher res though, if you're willing to fork out the cash.

Thanks for both answers! I am spoiled by the ergonomic keyboard I have at the office, but having the combined keyboard and mouse on the same wireless console are the most important features. Maybe enermax makes that model as well. Off to surf for my answers; will post results when I return.

OK, back from shopping to share results: no one makes what I want!
Attention product designers...
Ergonomic keyboard with BACKLIT keys
2.4 ghz with at least 35ft range
built-in track ball/pad
traction on bottom surface to stay put on lap
Li battery with AC adapter/charger
Anybody have additional input??
I offer this input and welcome the opportunity to test the new products:D

You should suggest it to a great company like Logitech. They make great keyboards as it is. I love my illuminated keyboard for late night gaming!
