Why did Intel named its processors i5 and i7?

Wiki says

Intel representatives state that the moniker Core i7 is meant to help consumers decide which processor to purchase as the newer Nehalem-based products are released in the future.[8]

Though I'm not really sure that makes much sense.

I have always thought that it had something to do with name attractiveness. iPod? Popular? Yes. i (correct me if I'm wrong) stands for interactive. This gives customers a friendly and welcoming processor. i could also stand for ingenuity, or something like that.

The "i" stands for Internet, as in Internet ready devices. When the very first iMacs came out, one of their selling points was all you had to do was plug it in and you could get online instantly.

That is how I perceived it.

Another possibility.

Well what about the number? Someone told me it was because the i5 and i7 had a total of 5 and 7 cores total if you include virtual cores. I have a hard time believing that.

bcuz bigur numburs r beter lol.

No seriously, it has a bit of a ring to it, and they've likely had the i5 and i3 versions planned for a while. So if they called the i7 the i3 originally (It being the highest of the 3 available. ) then that leaves the actual i3 being the i1, which just sounds plain silly. The random assortments of numbers and letters are basically just that. Minus the research used into which ones sound the most appealing. Hell just look at anything with an "X" in the name. :P Doesn't it seem so cool and rad?

i find it strange they called their six core processor the i7 980x.
apparently they were gonna call it the core i9 which probably would have been better.
but at £800 who cares
