i ordered a new computer and when it came it already had over 20gb of used harddrive space used up..that is quite a bit....specially when your hdd is only an 80 gig...well supposed to be...the drive only shows 74gig of spcae on disk...why is this so...when computers with 4gig of space on them have just as many programs...least the ones at school compared to mine

Operating system takes up a few, and I'd check out the programs that were installed on it. My wireless card software took up a few gigabytes and hardrives such as 80 only have 74gb of useable. and so on..

Manufacturers take some of the space and set it to "factory default settings" so if you ever screw your PC over you can use that partition to try and fix any problems. It's been asked b4, see if the "Search" option will give you a better description.
