Why does external hardrive run transfer slower on desktop than laptop?

When I copy files to/from my external hardrive on my laptop, it takes about a few minuites to transfer a few gigabytes. How come when I try to copy files with my desktop computer, it takes a few hours?

I don't know if my motherboard has anything to do with it or not since I just built the desktop. It is a MA770T-UD3P motherboard that I got from newegg.

What should I do to fix this problem?

There are many factors that could play in here, but I suspect it has something to do with your software. Are your software configurations identical on both systems? Vista and 7 are notorious for slow transfer speeds. Virus scaners can hinder performance a fair bit too.

make sure the drivers for your usb ports are installed. also make sure that it is a usb 2.0 port, not a 1.1 port

Laptop is vista and desktop is windows 7 64bit. The motherboard is supposed to have 2.0 ports but apparently not, I guess. I can't find my disc so I'll have to look it up online. I just don't see how software can hinder the transfer rate of the usb ports.
