Why does FireFox do this?

I set the home page to google.com. Google comes up when I open the browser.

But when I open a new tab, it goes to bing.com, and there doesn't seem to be anything I can do about it.

In the url bar type about:config find the browser.newtab.url setting and change it to whatever you'd like. The default value is about:newtab.

yea but I'm saying that seems like a basic function... shouldn't it be in Tools --> Options, just like setting the home page?

There is an option in your settings. Just go there click the box that says "advanced settings" and there should be an option for "opening new tab"

There may be an easier way, but not being a big firefox user, I only know one

You may need to right click above the URL bar and tick the "Menu Bar" option as newer firefox releases like to hide it.

The setting you are looking for will be under the Tools menu. Exactly where depends on your version of firefox.

It may also be an addon/search provider. Go to Tools > Addons and check the addons/extension anything Bing.

You must have installed something from Bing. In all the years I have used Firefox I never had it open Bing. Do as suggested and edit in about:config.
