Why does it take 4ever to connect to the internet on first boot?

Normally, one sees the send light on the modem going off. In my case nothin, not even a flicker.

Specs:

AMD XP1700+
WinXP, firewall not on
1 network card (for this computer, ie. no excess networking cards)
Cable internet
Cheap Retail Plus Wired Router, firewall on whether you like it or not

I suspect it's the cheap ***********, bug-proned, beta-riffic AMD-based motherboard, since my older intel celeron doesn't do this.

What web browser are you using? I know that happens quite frequently with IE, but I never have that problem with Firefox.
 
yeah and when you're having this delay does it say "Detecting proxy settings..." along the bottom of IE?
 
Yeah...

It does say detect proxy after 3+ times opening/closing IE. Oh and btw, it doesn't say that automatically. I'd have to wait until that error page loads and manually click detect proxy settings.

Why not, Internet explorer is fine he just hasn't connected properly :)

for about 95% of users IE is the best option. i share his opinion though, i try to avoid IE with its gaping security holes/questionable stability. i never had a connection problem with IE6, but i did have 100's of errors/debug messages until i switched to firefox. i would suggest updating mobo BIOS, all drivers, clearing TEMP files, spyware scanning, and making sure your modem is up to date with all its drivers and such. it could potentially be an old cable cord your using...they do short out after long use/abuse. try another cord and cleaning up the computer a bit. if that doesnt help its probably a bad network adapter on your mobo or maybe your ISP is having problems. call them up and seee if they have had recent connection problems with other users as well.
 
yes it might be overheating, that might cause it to lag.

No, a cable modem should never be turned off, since it takes a lot of time until it syncs with the RF signal.

ok, i jsut got the overheating idea from reading ur post. my bad.
