why does my comp keep freezing

hi everyone, i joined the forum because i have started to get more in to "better rigs"
i sold my dell latitude c640 1.8ghz p4-m 512meg 80gig hdd because it only had a 32meg graphics card.

ANYWAY!
i decided to buy a decent spec desktop so, i plug it all in and while installing vista it crashes/freezes ok i thought, tried it a few times and each time i tried it did it at different stages........
so i installed xp and guess what-IT DID IT AGAIN!
i have tried another hdd, yup did it again.
i dont really have much knowledge on pc's but i know it must be a HARDWARE PROBLEM!?

where do i start? any help would be appreciated

asrock p4v88 motherboard
3gig p4 ht
1024mb ddr400mhz ram
nvidia fx5500 256mb graphics card
160gb ide hdd
floppy
dvd/rw

2 extra fans on the atx case plus lights etc.....
the bios has been reset and left as standard.

it also SEEMS to be doing it between anything from 15mins to 2hrs now
oh and i managed to install vista in the end.....

i have used the ram in another pc and its ok aswell as the cpu....

it just did it again!!!
the dvd/rw drive still ejects when it freezes tho....

cd rom will eject as long as there is power.

right, left it on all day in bios on the temp/voltage settings and it diddnt crash???

ide connector maybe?

seems to be a change in fan speed during boot, related maybe?
powers up and seems to drop a bit????

some people who have had this problem say updating vid card drivers can correct the issue, try that.
