Why does my CPU overheat? (Not overclocking)

Hey,

I've had trouble from the getgo with this computer. It was damaged in shipping, and I had to replace the mother board. Then, I could not run my Athlon 2.2 GhZ processor at 2.2.. its currently at 1.1 and I cant get it any higher else the system gets too hot and shuts down. I replaced the Fan, I have gotten another Fan for my box as well, and still it will not work. Its cooler now, definatley and instead of 5 minutes at 2.2 I can now go about 20 minutes at 2.2, but its still annoying. What else can I do to get the computer up to a normal speed? Please help!

Oh, Also, I have an AMD Athlon 3300+ 2.2 Ghz Processor, 1 GB RAM, 256 MB ATI Radeon Vid Card.. and its a Socket 'A' Motherboard. (Which sucks, cause nothing goes in that anymore) :(

ambient temperature

what is the temperature in your environment?
it should be no hotter than 75 degrees.

Its about 72 degrees.. was 70 in the summertime with the air conditioning. Right now the temp at half speed is 52 C (According to speedfan)

Your gonna have to chekc your heatsink, replcae themal paste and re install the heatsink and make sure its on proper and tight !

I tried with applying a new layer of thermal paste before I got the new fan, had someone else apply it who is a professional as well, and with no luck. Then I got a new fan/heatsink, applied it just how the pro did (I am not an ameture) and still no luck.

Thank you for the responses!

It was damaged in shipping, and I had to replace the mother board.

Damaged how exactly? Bmped? Dropped? Open Box? For as sensitive as CPUs are, they can be quite hardier than MoBo's in many regards. Do you have either a spare CPU or MoBo you can use to get some testing done?

No I dont. It was bumped. My last resource is buying a new motherboard/CPU, and I'd like to try anything I can beforehand.

It was dropped in shipping, Bumped around so bad, that the white part that connects the processor to the motherboard was ripped off, and bent the heatsink under the processor.

hmm i doubt its the cpu, but what i would do is feel the heatsink and see if it actually gets warm/hott, my quad shuts off at 80c since some how the waterpump fan got unpluged and wasnt pumping water, if it does get hot, open the case tighten it all the way and put like a big outside fan facing on it, it may be your gpu

also if your computer shuts off make sure your power supply cables arnt getting in any contact with the case or anything, i experienced this as well, go in bios and go under system monitor and that is your real temp dont trust speed fan and leave it at that screen for 10 minuites and tell me what the temp is and put it on 2.2ghz

I'll do that. I put the temperature turn off at.. either 70 or 75 degrees, thats why it turns off. I'll check the temp tho and get back to you!

it wouldnt shut off at 70 or 75 degrees but at celsius it probably would.

alright do these instructions keep your computer off for 10 minuites let everything cool down till all the heatsink's in your computer turn to your room temperature. then right when u turn it on go into system monitoring and read what everything says and record the temps avery 5 minuites and let me know the highest temp and while doing that touch the side of your heat sink if you dont mind and see if it is actually getting hot, my cpu shut off at 80c and the cpu was as hot as a stove pan so if it feels nothing like that, then it could be your motherboard, also download pcwizard 08 and tell me the temps you get there

I meant degrees as in degrees C of course.

I shut it down and changed it to 2.2 ghz.. did the bios check.. it started at 58 C and at the end of 10 minutes it was 68 C and was rising slowly. Thats with nothing running :(.

I'll do the shutdown thing tomorrow when I go to work, and come back and check the temperature then and as it goes up, etc.

hmmm i would say unconnect everything from the back of your computer put it on your bed or somewhere you can sit and comfortable and unscrew the heat sink, then take out the cpu, and see if you have thermal paste on the cpu, or see if its dark, then i would put the processor back in the socket and make sure the heatsink is on the right way and tighten all the way, can u give me a link to your heat sink, i do have a spare
q6600 heatsink but i dont know if it is compatable with amd heatsinks and probably cant send it to you, the reason has to be is the heat sink isnt in right or your fans not good enough

oooh i also frogot to tell you, in bios go under fan option and set cpu fan and make sure its on 100%- change it from smart fan to manual then change to 100%
