Why Does Only 1/2 of Installed RAM show?

Up until a couple of weeks ago, my RAM was showing up as 1512 Megabytes Installed Memory.

Slot 'A0' has 1GB
Slot 'A1' has 512MB

Now Belrac Advisor and windows shows:

736 Megabytes Installed Memory

Slot 'A0' has 512 MB
Slot 'A1' has 256 MB

I have removed all RAM modules and reinstalled one at a time. I have used brand new ones, the original ones, and RAM modules from my other computer. I have tried 1GB, 512MB, and 256MB sticks of quality RAM. They all show exactly 1/2 of what they should be showing.

The computer is my sons Compaq Presario 6420NX.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Does the computer have integrated graphics? If it does, it is using some of the memory, but I don't think it would use that much.

thats different, that takes part of the total system memory, usually up to 128MB.

His problem is that whatever ram size he puts in there, it shows up as half.

When you put just one stick in, does that show up as half too? Try resetting the CMOS Jumper and see if that makes any difference.

What might be going on is that what I read about the 6420nx is that it will only read 1gb of ram, if you go over 1gb it will read the memory wrong, think it has two slots, might just be able to read 2X512 and not even one 1gb stick

I was thinking the same thing. I thought I had tried it without the 1GB installed. I will play with it this weekend to see what I come up with.
