Why does the Web slow down when I plug into router?

When I plug my Ethernet cable directly into my cable modem, I get 60 mbps download speed. But if I plug the cable modem's Ethernet cable into my router first, then connect my computer to one of the four out-ports on the back of my router, my download speed drops to 12 mbps. My router is listed at 300 mbps. What's going on here?

What router do you have? Have you tried resetting it back to defaults? Or upgrading firmware?
 
What do you mean your router is listed at 300Mbps? You are plugging in directly right? If so, you should be connected at 1Gbps.

As John said, does restarting the modem or upgrading the firmware help? What model is it?
 
I have the Asus RT-N12. By '300 mbps' I mean that's what I saw on the box. But if that's wireless speed, and the Ethernet port is 1 Gig, then I understand what you're saying.

I unplugged it yesterday, before my test, so that obviously didn't help. I have no idea how to update firmware, but I'll look into it.

The last firmware update for that router was over 3 years ago. Is this a new router? The latest nonbeta firmware is Version 1.0.1.4
 
Check to see what firmware it has, update it if necessary. We can help you do that if you need it.
 
Do you have a wireless device you can run a speed test on? To upgrade the firmware, you go to your routers IP address, administration, then firmware.

The above 2 tests were done with my laptop. Unplugging and using WiFi gives the following result:

I can't remember my router's password, but I will try to find it.

I reset my password and successfully logged into my Asus control panel. But every time I try to update the firmware, I get an error message.

After resetting my router, I tested the speed, and now it's right on the money. Look's like I'm all set. Thanks for your help.

In order to update the firmware, you have to unzip it and then inside is another file with an extension of .trz i believe. The trz fike is the file you need to use.
