Why doesn't 800x600 work for my computer?

If I select this resolution, the desktop gets exagerattely widened, and blurry (and I didn't have this problem from the start, it only started a few months ago). And you know what the weird thing is? Once I did the stupid thing of installing Windows again on the other partition, and when I was running that version, it was working, but not on the older one. I formatted my computer since, and I still have this problem. Now, I know 800x600 isn't nearly as commonly used as it was back in the 640x480 era, but still, I'd like to use it in games and such.
Does anyone know why is this happening?

Try updating the video driver. You probably have a generic driver installed right now.
