Why doesn't my printer show up?

I just bought a new printer, a Cano PIXMA...... It is plugged in correctly, but it doesn't show up.... nothing about it shows up on Device Manager.... it's as if it's not there....

How do I begin troubleshooting?

Is it turned on? Do you have drivers installed? Have you tried a different cable or USB port?

Have you tried another PC?

The cable is fine, it's brand new. The computer is fine. The port is fine. When I first plugged it in, it said something about "new device detected," but now I can't find it.

I know it recognizes it because the computer makes a sound when I turn the printer on and off.

When I try to print, the print options that it gives me are "Microsoft XPS Document Writer,".... and it wants me to save it as an .xps file, which I have no idea what that is.

I do not think that this .xps thing is referring to the printer that I just bought.

Nope XPS is just a way of saving a Document. Have you installed the driver disk that came with the printer?

What OS are you using? (If on Windows, press Winkey + R and enter winver.exe and run it to find out.)

Go into control panel, devices and printers, check to see if your printer is listed and set as default. Any as suggested, download and run the software and driver install from the printer manufacturer.

It's not listed in control panel. I don't have the software that came with it.

I'm running Windows 7 professional.

Canon Multifunction Printer K10392

How do I find the driver to install?

It says that it can't detect a printer, even though when I turn the printer on and off, I hear the computer make a sound, and when I unplug it from the USB and plug it back in, it also makes a sound. So obviously it is detecting something.

Do you know what the problem could be.

Try installing the printer on another computer and see if it works. If it does, then its something with your pc.

The usual procedure for installing a new printer is that you install the software, then plug in the printer when it tells you to. Have you tried just unplugging the printer, uninstalling the software if it's already installed, restarting the computer, installing the software (again) and then plugging it in? If it's already plugged in it might get confused (I recall something like this happening with an Epson printer of mine). Or does it not show up in the device manager even with an exclamation mark?

Perhaps, the printer is not recognized yet by your computer. I think, some are correct here that you have to check the settings. Or rather visit the Canon support site to download the required compatible drivers, utilities, manuals, and others. You may get help from there.
