Why I love open source...

The thing I love about apple and linux distros is that every thing like the cloud and office software is all FREE unlike Microsoft 1 use per product key... What do you guys think of open-source? :-)
 
You do know Apple does not fall under the open source category right? Open Source means that the SOURCE code is OPEN to the public. Apple does not release anything to the public other then the product that cost money. In fact Apple uses a lot of open source programming from a BSD built OS that will only run on a Apple computer or VM known as Darwin. On the other hand they do not release anything back to that community other then some source code but it has stipulations.
 
i love how there can be a boat load of free, often unmaintained, softwares that all do the same thing but you need to have a very specific setup to run either of them and trying to match your distro, dependencies, and hardware configurations to do anything productive is so much fun ;)

Unmaintained? I guess that depends on the software you use, a majority of the software I use is pretty well maintained and works flawless with my Vaio in my specs. I guess there are some pretty crappy maintained software out there are a lot that work good.

What do you all think about proprietary software coming to Linux. Lets face it as it continues to grow it will eventually happen but the only thing that I see killing it is some of us have problems using proprietary which would affect how many people actually would adopt to using it making it less profitable.
