Why I went back to Windows After Having Got to Know Linux

Linux is half cooked.

For example:

Ring ring ISP " hello this is your ISP"
You "hi my internet is not working"
ISP "ok no problem we can fix that"
You "ok great ;)"
ISP "what operating system do you have"
You "linux dev"
ISP "good bye"
Has this actually happened during the last decade or so? I've never had any Internet issues with Linux.

Pretty much all the ammunition Linux users had prior to Win 7 is now gone.
How's that?

My ISP has never asked me what OS I use. I have Macs, Linux and Windows boxes in my home. They all use TCP/IP networking so it is not like Windows has it's own special network protocol it uses for the Internet.

I had something similar to to that happen a few months back, but it was not fault of linux. I was unable to connect to some sites via my isp, but was able to connect on me blackberry (thus site wasnt down) so I called up Time Warner.
TWC: may I please know what operating system you are using?
me: Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit, its a Linux based operating system.
TWC: (2 minutes later), do you have access to a MAC or Windows computer? These are the only supported operating systems.
me: Goodbye.

(went to century link, and solved all problems. Heck, the tech guy that installed it was almost as Linux savvy as I am.)

I have to agree with wolfeking-- if you are smarter than your ISP tech support staff, then it is likely time to find a better ISP.

I have run into very few issues in Linux that couldn't be solved after a little quality time with my search engine. Many of those are due to DRM-type issues and the refusal of certain companies to allow open-source access to their product.

Linux is not for everyone, for certain-- if you don't want to know what's 'under the hood' then stick with MS or Apple. If you expect to be spoon-fed, then certainly stay on the Windows side of life.

If you can't stand to leave something out-of-box stock, though... there is a Linux flavor or two with your name written all over it.
