Why is G better than N?

I have a router that supports G and N, and I have a PC which has a G and an N type adapter (2 separate adapters). But I seem to get better range and speed from the G adapter. And when the N adapter does connect, it is unbelievably slow.

Do you have any ideas? BTW, both have up to date drivers.
