Why is my anti virus scan slower then the anti sypwear program?

Why does my AVG Free virus scan take about 5x longer to complete a full system scan then my Ad-awear SE anti-adwear / spywear program?

Also I noticed that with Ad aware once it reaches file number 4,000 it skips to like 60,000. Where with the anit virus program it does not skip the files. So what is adawear doing? Does it truly scan all the files between 4,000 and 60,000 that fast or does it skip them?

I have both programs set to a full system scan. Not some smart scan or limited scan.

Also with AVG the last file count is like 10,000 where with adawear the last file count is like 110,000. Why?

You are talking about two totally different programs designed for different purposes there. For one AdAware SE Personal which is the version I assume is the one you are running is more specific to certail directories on a drive then AVG for different reasons. AdAware is designed for data miners and other crap that hides in the offline content folders as well as the browser folder. If something hijacks IE AdAware removes it.

Grisoft's AVG is geared to scan incoming emails as well as files and folders on the drive itself. Not only does it loof for files copied onto to the drive from some web site it looks for various changes in the different files on the one or more hard drives on your system. It spots certain codes in changed files where the files infected, system files especially, have been reprogrammed to be a hzard to a running system. Those need to repaired or replaced.

Ok well does both programs check EVERY SINGLE file on the entire hard drive when I choose "scan full computer(in Adaware SE) / Scan computer (in AVG)"? Yes I have the personal edition.

Also if my programs are fully updated (virus definitions) is it possible it will not catch a virus/ adware program? Or if the program scans the computer and comes back with no viruses / adwear, can I be rest assured?

I had already assumed that you were running the free version of AdAware which does catch a good number of thing. AVG is good one as well. But no one program can catch everything out there on the web.

When you see good results you usually have a clean system to work with. But it never to be familiar with several not just a few programs lke these. Once in awhile something will get through and you start seeing problems without knowing what is causing it. Besides AVG another one that is close to AdAware is called Ewido. That is available at the same site as AVG. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/ewido-anti-spyware-free/lng/us/tpl/v5

Here I run both AdAware and Ewido since one will catch what the other one will miss quite often. AVG catches other types of viruses and spywares as well as alerting you when something gets copied to the drive from a new web site. Webroot's Spysweeper caught something all three of those missed. Just watch out for the ones that say you have a list of things but you must buy in order to see them removed. That's a gimic too often seen to sell!
