Why is this laptop not responding?

This laptop (HP 2000 Notebook)says "not responding" from time to time and I don't know why. I have run an Avast scan, Malware, JRT, and all the other recommended programs and cleared everything. I ran CCleaner recently and cleared everything out.

It has 4gb of RAM, and is currently using only 1.48 is being used. It is using only 30gb of its 447gb harddrive. It has a 2.40gHz processor running at 3% usage.

It mostly says "not responding" when Internet Explorer is running, but it also does it at other times.

Can anyone think of a reason why this might be happening?

In case you tell me to reload the operating system (Windows 7), the disc is not available. Is there a way to do it without the disc?

Yes, there is a way to do it without the disk, you create one by downloading the appropriate version that you already have. You download the ISO file and use burning software to write the iso image to dvd and you have a windows 7 installation media. Do you have home premium and is it 32 or 64 bit? Do you have the key on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop? ISO files are here.

You just need to download the correct one for whatever type you have.

When it says not responding, hit ctrl-alt-del and bring up the task manager, find out what task is not responding. If its internet explorer, just use a different browser. What version of IE are you using?

It has to be a DVD, not a CD?

(edit: nevermind, I found the answer to that question. Don't waste your time answering)

The windows installation media is over 3gb and will not fit on a cd, needs to be a dvd.

Okay I download the file to a dvd but am now having another problem. When I try to restart the computer, it gets stuck on a screen saying...

"Failure configuring Windows updates
Reverting changes.
Do not turn off your computer."

This is Windows 7 Home Premium.

And it gets stuck on this screen and doesn't move. It will not allow me to move the mouse, but it is not entirely frozen because I see that the cursor icon is still moving in a circle.

I try starting it in Safe Mode, same thing.

Once I do get the operating system to load, how do I run this .iso file? Do I just click on the drive in My Computer and load it from Windows, or do I have to boot the computer from the DVD drive and if so, how do I do that?

Did you just transfer the file to a dvd? You can't do that. ISO files must be written to a dvd. Windows 7 can do this with no added software. Download the ISO file and open it. You should see the windows disk image burner windows pop up. Use that to write the iso image to a dvd. Then you boot to the dvd to reinstall windows.

Trouble booting from dvd

It says that the dvd drive is not working properly, so I can't boot from it.

Do you know how to get past the problem where it says "Windows can't configure" or whatever it said in my previous post, because I can't even get onto the operating system at this point.

And yes, I did burn it to the dvd, not just copy it.

And my brother says his dvd drive has always worked as far as he knows.

Looks like windows is corrupt so you will need to reinstall anyway. Create the dvd on another system if the burner don't work.

Windows worked fine just yesterday. The dvd is already created, but it won't boot on that computer. It says hardware error even though my brother says he has never had a problem using that dvd drive.

Don't know what to tell you. Check your bios to make sure the dvd drive is set for first boot device and if the dvd drive is working properly then you should see a screen that says press any key to boot from cd/dvd. Then you press a key and the installation starts up.

Restoring to factory takes well over an hour, sometimes a couple hours esecially on HP's. You couldn't have done a factory reset in less than an hour.

Control Panel --> Recovery --> Advanced Recovery Options --> Return your computer to factory condition

I know how you access it. But I can't understand how you could do a factory reset when I've done them on HP's tons of times and they take an ungodly amount of time, usually more than 90 minutes. But if its working fine now than I guess thats the main thing.
