Why Overclock a high-end computer?

This is something I don't understand.

Let's say, you have a Q6600 and a 8800 GTX.
What's the point for those that overclock the 8800 ? How OCing it would make the game go faster as it probably can't even slow down the game at the first place?

And for the CPU, someone posted about OCing it succesfully to 4ghz. Ok, that's an exception. But let's say you OC it to 3 ghz, from 2.4ghz. You can't really tell the difference right?

But on top of the fact that there is not much difference, you have to RISK, and PAY.

Can someone let me know why you would OC a high-end computer?

you'll get more frames and get better results in benchmarks. you'll notice difference from 2.4 to 3ghz

Benchmarks, and because it's cool having a super fast computer that nothing can keep up with. ;)

At least I think. I don't have a high end rig, and i really don't know if I'd overclock if I did.

The overclocking mentality comes from knowing you're only going to keep a given setup for a year or two (opposed to 3-5 like a normal user) and saying "why shouldn't i get as much as possible out of this equipment while i have it?" and running it way fast and hot, knowing when it burns up you'll just replace it with something new.

The same reason people buy $50,000 cars, then spend another $20-30,000 modifying it, only to crash it a year later. Then they go out and buy another one.

It's a passion, it gives you a "buzz" of sorts, and it's fun :D

lol maybe you've had bad cooling in the past....but alot of people tend to moderately OC with air cooling (I only went up 600mhz) or they go all out with liquid cooling. Either way, no one would let their parts burn up, they overclock proportionally to how good their cooling set up is.

However, we do feel as we're getting the best out of our parts, but not expending anything at the same time.

hmm that's so true hahaha

alright.. this thread was just to convince myself to OC my com. Thanks :)

I think its a hobby by itself. For me though, i only overclock when my PC can't handle the minimum acceptable performance for a game. If it works, I can delay buying new components, if I break it, I probably have to buy a new one anyway.
