Why reinvent the wheel when you can perfect it?

I was given a homework assignment for this semester. The criteria is that it has to benefit the computer-using society. I am pretty skilled in programming and so i decided to modify ubuntu. The problem is, what will make ubuntu better? In a more broad term, what do you think will make the whole linux experience fuller?

For example, but not limited to, using a lighter weight word processor instead of open-office.

Anyways, send your suggestions this way. Even if you think it's stupid, post it anyways. Every thought counts.
Thanks!

I like the bar that minimized windows go at the top but when I start up ubuntu it's above the applications/sytem/time bar, not just below it.
Drivers that allow you to access the internet built in, and because people will get online and whine about that have a downloadable driver that removes unused modem drivers and then deletes itself? Redundent a bit but without the internet a computer is basically unusable to me.
OOO a cool thing would be floppies preinstalled with either a long list of drivers or a linux OS with basic drivers, oooo that would be nice. (Dial-up sucks.)
I haven't used it long enough to have much more then that, the no internet thing...
Weird that you have to open a random folder to get to the MyComputer stuff, but as I said, I'm not even a Linux-newbie let alone user.

ubuntu ultimate is there of r a reason guys

Uh, im guessing you are meaning to say "ubuntu ultimate is there for a reason guys"?

My aim is not to create a bloated distro like ubuntu ulitamate. IMO ubuntu ultimate is a joke. All it has is more preinstalled apps and a different theme and they call it another distro.

yeah sorry , spelling mistakes, im way off better using ultimate than the normal 6.10 or 7.04,
why ?
because you have to keep in mind that not many of us have good internet connection to be able to download huge apps, 15+mb to fully make use of Ubuntu (or any other that comes blank).
you on the other hand have good internet connection , so 15mb for you is nothing but for me..and the others here, its HUGE

Yeah, this is true. Just curious, how did you obtain ubuntu ultimate? Did you order it online or download it?

So your basicly saying more support for dial up modems?

Yes!
I tried to download linux-XP (just to see) the first time once the approx time left evened out it said 88 hours!!! >.<
I tried agian and got 53, 17mbs into it my net dies, 17MBS!!! That's got to be the best my net has ever gotten on a download, and it was the first try(it didn't disconnect until 17mbs)

Bump.

A few suggestions i have gotten are to remove open-office and use abiword instead, codecs installed by defaul, flash installed by default and a new standard theme.
Keep suggestions comming.

How about Beryl installed by default?

very true, lol, but then again, sabayon Linux has everything installed by default, you name it

Interesting. Didn't know that. :D Then again, when it comes to Linux distros, I know almost nothing. :P I used Ubuntu (Feisty Fawn) for a little while. The rotating desktop (Beryl plug-in) is cool.

The beryl does come installed default on ubuntu. Sorry i didn't clarify, i am going to be doing this with ubuntu gutsy, not ubuntu feisty. It actually comes with compuz-fusion. If you haven't tried it, i highly recommend trying it out. It blew my mind...

Cool. Gutsy is the 7.10 beta, right?

ok i am currently dual booting with ubuntu and i absolutly love how efficient it is. my only problem with it is this...i do a lot of media production (ie. video, audio, and image editing) and i now have adobe master collection and shake 4.1 and i cant use them on ubuntu. i know there are certain apps that can make some versions of adobe apps work but its extremely limited from what ive seen and not always reliable. If you could get ubuntu just as compatible with these apps you would be a hero to alot of people in the video production industry my friend. because if you dont run a mac all you have is windows and its horribly in-efficient code....but this sounds like a cool assignment. i love ubuntu but that is really the only thing holding me back from making the complete change to linux only.

Making it compatible would be close to impossible for one man alone. What i could do is have an option to run winxp ontop of the x server layer so it appears to run natively but really is just a lightweight virtual machine.

:( That's the only good idea I had for ya.

I don't think Beryl should be included by default. I think I heard you say that the new Compiz-Fusion in the BETA was amazing... I'm inclined to agree. It includes the best of Beryl without the bloat, and the way Ubuntu has utilized it is second to none.

I had a friend (sort of) in one of my classes last year who had made a GUI for fstab configuration. That's a big task, but those kind of things are what will bring more people to Linux. Ubuntu 7.10 has a GUI for X configuration right? That's what I believe is a step in the right direction.
