Why won't anything open?

I am cleaning my friend's computer up (which I've done before on other computers without a problem) so that it runs faster.

After cleaning the registry with RegCleaner (one of the steps I always do to clean up a computer), something strange started happening.

I click on the folders on the desktop (which contain the different program icons--not the programs themselves) and they won't open. Including the Recycle Bin.

When I click any of the Start menu (which does expand), the menu items either don't respond or My Computer does open up, but shows a new Search page instead of what it was that I clicked on in the Start menu (like My Documents).

Everything else is working fine--the files and documents are still there, it isn't going slower.

The last thing I did was just clean up the registry.

Everything's THERE, I just can't open the folders or Start menu things to *view* them.....

I've had the same thing happen to me but only one program. I have Microsoft Streets & Trips and everything worked fine with the program up until about 2 weeks ago. I can double click on the icon and it acts like it wants to open but then stops. Nothing happens. Any suggestions?

That is very weird... I've had similar problems, but usually not recurring.

My first suggestion would be to try a Windows repair. Here's a link with the instructions.

If that doesn't work, or you don't have an XP disk around, you could try system restore. Boot to safe mode (press F8 after the BIOS/POST screens on your computer, just before the XP screen shows up). If given the option, log into your normal account. If it won't load, try another account if avaliable. Assuming the computer is working now, go to Start > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. Select a date before cleaning the registery and hope for the best :o

this is what you can do.

Open up task manager and shut down all the applications thats taking up the ram. This should speed up the computer. then try running a scan for virus spyware and registry errors. see if recurrence exist. IF it doesnt, then its all good, else , you have to restore the system. I suggest you do the stuff i mentioned in safe mode , so that you dont have anything else interfering with the process.

Hope this helps
:)
