How do I go about using a public connection but still keep my info safe. I need to be able to use my laptop to take care of private information.

um, there is no way of safe. i would say stick to https but that is not perfict. i think that is the best you can do

People can't just access your computer because you're connected wirelessly. The only thing on your computer that's ever accessable over a network is your shared folder, and even then you'd have to setup your own network, and people would have to know the name of to log in. It's no easier for someone to hack into your laptop while you sit in starbucks than it is for someone to hack into your home computer.

yes its hard to get to his computer, but the info leaving his computer can be accesed. aka loging to you bank

Actually, the main drive has a default share set for system purposes. Although not accessible through typical means, a determined individual could access it if they really wanted to.

Disable the "Server" service to disable the default share on your laptop. Ensure your using a good software firewall (i.e not windows firewall) and be vigilant as to what you do on a public network, personally i wouldnt be transfering any confidential information over the internet unless its on a https site.
