well i sold my pc i built while ago, been using a compaq.. the money i got from selling my pc i bought a laptop on ebay.. never recieved it, accidently closed the dispute and paypal wouldnt reopen it or help me out after.

my question to you all is, wich i know this is gonna be like apples and oranges but...

-mostly gaming
-multitasking , word, internet, aol, msn, photoshop, music, movies etc, dvd ripping
is all mostly what ill be using the pc for

if your choice is am2, wich processor to go with?... not looking to buy the best of the best right off the bat but something fast and will play all games flawlessly

same ^ for the new intel's

whats your choice and opinion

Well, how much do you want to spend on the new computer? We need a budget before giving you much helpful advise.

well i looked around what do you all think about the x2 4200+ windsor ?

i also need to figure out wich board im gonna use i know i wwant asus, and SLI

wish list right now is at 1,700$ including everything from speakers to that cpu, only thing not on their right now is the motherboard, so ill be spending around 2k on the whole system

Dude, the new Core 2 Duo's are MUCH better the X2 Athlon's. Intel did an amazing job this time.

I don't know the ratio. I remember Athlon's did 1.5x (3/2x) more work per clock than the P4's, but not sure what it is for C2D and X2's.

Stock clocks for both are very similar, but C2D's seem to overclock past 3GHz easily. I know many X2's struggle with this.

should i spend the extra few hundred for like the E6600 or just get the E6300 for only 180?

ill be spending 280 for the asus p5w dh delux motherboard

I wouldn't mix a $180 CPU with a $280 mobo. Either go with the E6600 or save a bit of money with a cheaper mobo.

I agree. The E6300 and E6600 are base models for the two types of Core 2 Duo's. For what your spending on your other components, buying an E6600 would be the best choice.

cool, well after reading tons and tons of reviews, and listening to you all ive decided ill go with the c2d E6600 and my asus p5w DH delux mobo, hopfully all turns out ok for the money ill be spending and ill have a smile on my face

thanks guys

no dont get a e6600 they are only 2.6ghz get a 920 they are 3.2ghz

the 920 has more pipelines and has a higher processing cycles per second

Oh great. You really don't know what you are talking about.

The e6600 kicks the living crap out of a PD 920. Look at some benchies here. The E6600 is many many times better than the 920 in everything.

And as for your second statement....three letters describe it quite well. WTF?

There's a WHOLE lot more to CPUs than clock speeds.

The longer (not more) pipeline in the P4s is actually a disadvantage.

The E6600 will completely destroy the 920 at, well, anything.
