wich new video card should i choose

I have $400 to $450aus and im buying a new video card just not sure wich one. have a choice between 5870 or gtx470 wich should i get? I know the 5870 will outperform the 470 but do I want to give up physX support? no fan boys please

I like the fact that you are asking for no fanboys LOL. Well, I'm not, but the 5870 is better than the GTx470. I wouldn't worry about the PhysX support. When I upgraded my card from my 8600GTS to a 3850, I didn't notice the whole PhysX thing. Anyway. Go for the 5870 ;)

thanx. the problem with fanboys is obvious they tell u what they want u to get and dont give u an answer bassed on facts just on their favorite brand, I have always used Nvidia but I only care about best value and performance

I agree with what you say, and with what Elimin8or says. I'd go for the 5850 too, Physx doesn't make a whole lot of difference. If you got 2 systems side by side in a Physx game and one had an ATi card, and the other had a similar nVidia card with Physx enabled, you wouldn't be able to tll the difference in any way

Yep, you sure should. As I said before I'm not a fan boy, ATI just has the best cards ATM. IDK whats up with nVidia, they used to be at the top....

5870 of course... best price to performance ratio for the price. there is a downside: you won't be able to cook eggs on it like you can with a 470 :P

I kid, I kid...

...

My understanding was that the increase in price from the 5850 to the 5870... that the increase in price was greater than the increase in performance. In other words my impression was that the 5850 was a better 'bang for the buck' card with the 5870 charging a premium for the added performance. Am I off about this?

No the ATI HD 5870 is worth it its just around 7% slower than the best card nVidia has to offer and the 5870 runs much cooler and consumes less power than the nvidia so it is also a better overclock(correct me if I am wrong :D).
And since I have the budget I would go with the 5870.

If you are so worried about the physx then I guess you can run an nvidia card with an ATI card for physx.
You can get a cheap nvidia card for physx
Here is the guide

I dont recommend the above.

Not an ATI fanboy.
Proof
I use a GTX 275 instead of an HD 4890
