Widescreen gaming?

I'm thinking of getting a large screen for gaming. I'm looking at widescreen monitors and want to know, is it a better experience playing games on a widescreen monitor? Also is it worth it buying an 8ms 20.1" widescreen monitor over a 5ms 20.1" square monitor?

I have a 8ms 17" LCD and it's fine for gamming. I think as long as it's 12ms or faster, you don't typically notice any ghosting(or something around those speeds)

As for widescreen, it really depends if the game has the capability of showing in that res. Some games are just made for basic 3:2. Also, as you might know, the desktop, websites, and such are usally off as they aren't made for the resolution.

well ya i have a great 17" 8ms monitor but im wanting a giant screen because im also saving up for whatever high-end gfx card will come out for DirectX 10 and I want to take advantage of higher resolutions. Also I think u mean 4:3 instead of 3:2. Also, websites wouldnt bother me too much, ill most likely dual screen the 20" with my 17". If I go widescreen this is what im getting http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=1910938&sku=V18-2052

I'm pretty sure most of the modern games will support wide, or multi-display screens.

A multi-display system is usefull for multitasking! And you can stretch a game accross screens to make it ultra wide screen :) . The only thing though, is that if you play first person games, your crosshair is split in betwen two screens :( . But still great to have! :D

You could do three screens, no split crosshair there! but then you'd need a extra PCI video card to have three screns, or a SLI setup I think would do that too... hmmm

Alot of games detects the wide screen. Did you now the good old UT GOTY can support wide screen, and multi-display. Oblivion supports multi-screen, so I'm sure it can do widescreen. Lots of other modern-ish games support that too.

Oh ya! I just remembered!

I'll explain:

There's a very small list of games that actually support dual-display. But there's many that support different ratios of widscreen.

Now, with NVIDIA there's four settings you can set your two monitors.

Dual-display, wich is the mode that you probably have AdmnPower.

Clone Mode, wich makes both screens see the same thing (usally usefull for presentation, etc)

Vertical and Horizontal Span Mode: Wich makes windows beleive that your two screens are actually one big one.

When you do SPAN MODE, most games should detect the (widescreen) and sets the appropriate resolution.

One more thing, AdmnPower, do you have Ultramon?

Well i decided to get that widescreen monitor since in almost any ratings, reviews, and discussions ive seen that it is one of the top LCD screens you can get and even if a game doesnt actually support a given resolution, there's always ways to force the resolution you want, usually just an edit of a .ini or registry key.

Almost any new game has widescreen support. Take Steam games (HL, HL2, CSS, DoD, ect). They all support 4:3, 16:9, and 16:10 resolutions. They also support widescreen for dual-monitor setups.
