Wifi for work (which access point)

At the moment we have an access point on the ground floor which is a bit old now. We want a wireless g/n 2.4ghz access point for the ground floor and another for the 1st floor.

I think at the moment we probably have about 30 wireless devices which will all connect to these points.

What I need is reliability (not having to restart it everyday) and decent signal strength to penetrate the walls.

Budget is about 250 GBP, any suggestions?

Thanks guys

I acquired one a while back an a/b model and it replaced a dlink that wasnt cutting the cheese as far as stability over distance and through alot of walls... this worked out great. And I noticed 2 hospitals in my area use them throughout their hospital so you should be pleased.

Cool! Well I have bought the n 2.4 version with a dual channel antenna (660 GBP later...) Going to install it tomorrow. I will let you know how it goes.

Thanks again,
Steve

Here's a question for you...

I have set it up and wireless devices can connect to it, however they cannot get an IP address from the DHCP server. After a while the wireless devices such as my laptop will be assigned with 169.154.xxx.xxx

But if I connect to my older access point the wireless devices get an ip straight a way and can connect to internet etc...

Its so weird, I have got a few people to look at the configuration but we cannot figure out what's up. I have also tried disabling the security but still no joy.

Do you have any suggestions?

Is your old access point/router setup to provide a DHCP service to clients? Or do you have a dedicated server that runs DHCP?

Hi Omega,

wow you finally hit 30k congrats!

We have a Windows Server 2008 running the DHCP services. Usually I do not have to do anything with the wireless access points, just plug them in and they work. However this Cisco AP has a 1,000,001 options to configure but I cant find anything in the setup about DHCP.

Its weird because it works with 1 laptop and 1 iphone 4 but the 2 other laptops, 2 iphones and 1 ipad will not have any of it. Just fails to get an IP even though they have been on the network before and some of them devices are listed in the DHCP section on the server.

Fixed!

It was nothing to do with the AP, it was down to the port profile on the switch is was connected too! Once the switch was reconfigured it started working.

So far so good :D

Glad it is working well for you, i just now saw this DHCP problem. Does that AP have a dhcp server on it? Mine didn't.
