wifi on a laptop

I have a noob question so get ready....

I'm going to word this the best i can. It's kinda hard to word because i do not know all of the correct terms.

OK so the i pod touch has wifi internet. Well i dont know if its wifi but it can have internet pretty much anywhere it goes without needing a password to acess it, is that the same with a regular laptop that has built in wifi? I mean can you acess wifi on a laptop without a password?

Almost all modern laptop have some sort of built in wifi, whether wireless a, b, g, n etc. As for entering a password, that's up to the wifi provider. Where ever your ipod touch doesn't need a password your laptop wouldn't, and vice versa.

thats lame, well i guess ill keep my internet, i have wifi on my router just never set it up, because i only have a desktop, well nows a better time then any,

That's illegal bro.
Actually, if his neighbout doesn't have an encrypted connection i.e. it's unencrypted, unsecure, open connection, it's perfectly legal. Only when you crack the encryption (which you won't if there ain't none) you're braking the law...

So if someone's house is unlocked and you enter, is that considered trespassing?

wow......just wow...

Actually it's not illegal. If you steal a car and nobody catches you doing it then it's not illegal. Only when your caught is it illegal.

I know, I know, it's dumb... but I didn't make that up...

It is also common for people to use open (unencrypted) Wi-Fi networks as a free service, termed piggybacking. Indeed, many access points are intentionally installed without security turned on so that they can be used as a free service. These activities do not result in sanctions in most jurisdictions, however legislation and case law differ considerably across the world. A proposal to leave graffiti describing available services was called warchalking. In a Florida court case, owner laziness was determined not to be a valid excuse. [17]
As for the court case mentioned above, the owner was too lazy to set up encryption and he lost the case against someone who'd been using his internet connection.

And then they call the Feds...oh snap...
Yea, but depending on where (s?)he lives, that ain't gonna help.

Jeez I just looked outside... it's raining like hell!!1!

But yea, I wouldn't recommend piggybacking, even if it's not illegal around where you live there are ethical issues... morals... etiquette... law may allow it, but that doesn't mean it's right to do so. And as said, one day you try to connect and the connection may not be there, or it can be encrypted... it's easier to just pay for your own internet, that's the way things were meant to be. Well sorta.

Seems like the rain's stopped now, anyways,
