wifi question

Hi, my parents are going to get an external wireless usb router for their desktop to share our wifi, so I still need the dsl for gaming. Is there a way I could make it so they would use like 200kbps and I would use the other 2800?

QoS if your router supports it. Google should be able to tell you, or your router's configuration.

I would consult with your parents first about doing something like that since they pay the bills though. This is technically more a networking question over an Internet question. I think perhaps they should specif what this forum is really for, there seems to be a lot of networking questions. Perhaps Internet Applications and development would be a better category for this part of the forum.

What, lol, this is internet related, it could be in both places I mean one or the other. My parents dont need a fast internet speed, they dont watch videos or play games, and they think its ok.

No, it is a wireless networking question, and controlling bandwidth is networking. The Internet is just the world wide web. You can have a wireless network with out the Internet so they are not exclusive.

Ok, someone told me that if I'm gaming, someone else surfing the web won't affect a 3mbps connection, is this true?

It is mostly dependent on your upload speed, how fast can you upload to the game server. Bandwidth is split among every connected user, and depending on what they are doing depends on performance. Also, sometimes a router will try to load balance everything. It all just depends.

ditto. 1MB will be enough for download speed of big juicy video games but an upload speed varies. For example my new 3mbps broadband will have a 384KB upload speed which prob wont suffice much but I have to use it.

Generally if other people are using the internet only for browsing the web and reading e-mails, then you won't be affected much. However if they start downloading files, uploading, streaming media, etc, then your ping will be raised.

As for limiting the amount of bandwidth, it can't be done easily on consumer devices. QoS is available on several routers, however the ones I've used (Linksys mainly), don't work for crap.
