Hi guys
newbie here so if this question has been asked sorry.I have just installed a usb network card which works fine .Only problem is now when i move my desktop into my outside studio about 80 metres away i get a very week signal im running windows xp on a dell 5150 desktop

Okay?

Keep in mind signal degrades through materials and over distance. You could probably remedy the situation by using a card with a higher gain and/or directional antenna.

Also, it may be worth upgrading from XP as the end of support is on this Tuesday.

Your router is probably pretty weak, which is why the signal doesn't work well that far away. Either look into a better router (such as a high end ASUS router) or get a range booster.

Thanks guys ive now got a booster just a quick question does the booster need to be hooked up to my router via yellow ethernet cable at all times?

We need a lot more information. Do you know the model and/or specs of the wireless router and your wireless card? Specs such as the protocol (802.11a/b/g/n/ac), do they have external or internal antennas? This can help us in deciding if an upgraded router and adapter would solve your issues or if you need something additional.

Boosters/repeaters do work, however they cut the speed as they have to listen and retransmit all packets. They do not need to be connected to anything but power, and generally you'd want them to be in the middle between your router and client. This is more of a last resort option.

Can you move the wireless router closer to where you use your devices? This alone is the easiest way to solve your problem. If not, make sure the router is not surrounded by obstacles such as desks, cabinets, etc. as any obstacle degrades the quality of the signal.

Now do you just have a single modem and wireless router, or a dedicated router and a wireless access point? There are many excellent access points you can buy but they don't provide DHCP and other services.

right ok cant find out what graphics card i have but its a Dell 5150 desktop i have put pics of my router and adapter
