Will an HDMI to DVI cable inhance my video?

Hi, as it is right now Im using VGA. I have a DVI port and HDMI port in my video card that I can use and my screen has a DVI port. I'm wondering if I use other cords, such as HDMI to DVI if it will make a difference.

I don't see the reason why so many video cards have these HDMI ports; am I expected to buy a 1000$ high definition monitor/TV along with my 100$ video card. I'm not too up to date with the whole high definition. As far as I know usually computer monitors dont have it and people rarely use tv's with their computers so I dont see the point of having this port on my video card.

If your card has DVI and your screen has DVI, then you don't need an HDMI cable. Both DVI and HDMI are digital (VGA is analog) the digital signal will be cleaner and sharper. Just use a normal DVI cable.
 
HDMI and DVI are the same; just HDMI can carry audio over the line. There won't be any difference between them in actual video quality. VGA should be essentially as good, but is analog thus you will get some noise.

I suppose the main reason video cards have HDMI now is to cut down on wires. HDMI can carry HD video along with up to 8-channels of audio. With DVI you'd need at least two cables to do the same (DVI and coax or optical)
 
If it can increase the picture quality to use the digital DVI port on my monitor then I guess I can give it a try. Probably an HDMI to DVI cord, Thanks.
 
the HDMI ports are for the people who already have HD tvs and want to set up a media centre and play games on their TV.

I have an older HDTV without an HDMI port so I was glad to find a video card that offered component/svideo out. I connected it and everything looked pretty good, but HDMI on a large plasma would look better.
