I have a intel 478 p4 2.4ghz/512/533/1.5v cpu in need of a motherboard. will any 478 socket motherboard work.

well, the bios of the motherboard must provide support for the CPU. and It's possible (but not likely) that early s462 motherboard won't support 2,4ghz
when you find a motherboard, post the model here and I'll try to help you.
