Will I notice a difference?

I have a AMD Phenom 9600 Quad and along with my ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe board at AM2 only. It runs my 9600 fine but the 9600 is a AM2+ chip. I was thinking about swapping out the 9600 in favor of a 6400+ to fully use my AM2 board so...is that a downgrade or a upgrade or same?

It really depends on what your doing. For gaming it would be an upgrade unless you play fsx, gta4, or bfbc2. For video encoding type stuff and other quad threaded applications it would be a downgrade.

I use it for gaming but I haven't played anything that intensive. I am just waiting for D3 to come out. So basically its surfing net, iTunes and emailing.

So I updated my BIOS...now the best processor I can go is a Phenom II x4 945 @ 95w not 125w correct?

The GI is the C2 stepping. The GM is the C3 stepping. The C3 stepping is the newer model. Overclock better too. Plus has had some tweaking to the memory controller.

The 945 has a HT of 2000/4000. The AM2 board has 1000/2000HT. That in itself isnt that big of a hit. The point is, it would be a waste of money getting a X2 6000 at this point. Later if you decide to upgrade to a AM3/DDR3 board the 945 could be moved to it.

Or you could just wait till you have enough for a board and memory. Might have better deals on processors then. But it depends on time, dont really see processor prices dropping much in the next two or three months.

Very true. I don't forsee a new board and RAM for quite sometime as I don't really game that intense. I am waiting for Diablo 3 and gawd knows when that comes out. I will just wait...if I find a deal on a 945, I will snatch it. Maybe just upgrade piece by piece. With that said...even tho a new AM3 board says DDR3 800-1800...I can't use my DDR2 800 RAM in the AM3 board?
