ok so before i buy a few things for my ancient computer i would like to have your thoughts on it. my cmputer currently is a pentium 4 1.7Ghz processor, 256mb RAM, and a 64mb video card. when i play CS on it the game runs like crap. on lowest settings i get 20fps in a texture map. do you think that another 256mb of ram would improve my situation alot or not? if not i am going to get a new video card aswell but im not sure if either of these this will make a difference. will they? ps im only getting a cheap video card (radeon 9000 128mb) let me know how you think CS will run if i buy these 2 things or if i buy just the RAM.

Does your pc have a PCI-e slot or an AGP slot (for the graphics processor). Also, what model computer do you have?

Actually, if I'm not mistaken, I believe the 9000 is an AGP card (someone correct me if I'm wrong). I also think it only supports DX8.1. If you plan to play any of the more recent games, you'll def. want a better GPU. However, more RAM is always a good idea in those types of comps. Its so cheap these days I would go with a 512 stick. If you could tell me your budget as far as this upgrade goes, we might be able to help you out a little better.

Adding RAM wil lhelp a bit. I suggest nyou either a better CPU or at mleast overclock it a bit. My AMD 2600 was at 1400 points on PC wizard. Overclocked it to 1.9GHz, points were at 1700. Overclockinig does help. You should notice an good change if you overclock it a bit.

i say get a stick of 512Mb ram and add it alongside your 256 so you get 768Mb of ram,Then if you have a AGP slot get a 9600 pro,Its still an outtdated card but its quite good for the price.

i have one and it plays Fear on medium just fine,Prey,Doom 3.

also like oscaryu1 said,Try overclocking your cpu.

yes it is an AGP, and the card i have now only supports DX7, so its still an improvement lol, along with twice the memory. and im not looking to spend much, what im going to spend is my limit unfourtunatly.

ya, maybe 512 but that shit costs money. and i can't use the 9600 cause my mobo only supports agp4x.

i think you mean you cant use right?

if you meant that above ^ you CAN use a 9600...it will only run at 4x though.
i did mean cant and no i cant use it. ive figured this much out, a 4x card will run on a mobo that supports 4x or higher and will run at 4x. but you cant put an 8x or higher card on a mobo that supports 4x. im pretty sure i got that right but i may be wrong.
